Choosing a name is never just about branding. It’s about identity. It’s about values. It’s about the story we want to tell — and the future we’re building.
When we set out to build this company, we didn’t just want a functional name. We wanted a name that meant something, a name that reflected who we are, where we’re from, and what we stand for. That’s how BioTiba was born!
“Tiba” means healing or cure in Kiswahili, a language spoken across East Africa. It evokes care, health, and restoration—a perfect fit for a company working at the intersection of science, data, and public health. It’s a word that appears in hospitals, in everyday speech, and in the context of care, health, and community well-being.
That alone felt powerful for us — a company in genomics and data science, supporting public health, agriculture, and biomedical research. Tiba spoke directly to our why.
Tiba is also a word in Basaa, a Bantu language spoken in parts of Cameroon.
In Basaa, Tiba means something different — but equally fitting. It means “data”, plain and powerful. Two regions. Two meanings. One word.
The full picture came together when we combined it with “Bio” — short for biology, bioinformatics, and life sciences.
BioTiba = Biology + Data + Healing
A name that connects East and Central Africa. A name that reflects both our technical foundation and our human mission. A name rooted in African language, culture, and science.
We didn’t have to look far to find meaning—it was already in our languages, already rooted in our communities.
From Biology to Data to Healing
So when we combined “Bio” (for biology, life sciences, and genomics) with “Tiba”, we weren’t just naming a company — we were naming a vision: A company where data leads to healing. A company where biology meets insight, and insight leads to impact. A company rooted in African languages, built for African futures.
BioTiba reflects precisely what we stand for: Data. Life. Science. Healing. Growth.
And above all, African leadership in genomics.
This name is more than branding. It’s a commitment to the people we serve, the problems we solve, and the future we aim to build.
What the Name Represents
BioTiba is more than a name. It’s our roadmap.
It reminds us that:
- Data has power. But it needs context, tools, and people to make it meaningful.
- Healing isn’t just about medicine. It’s about systems, knowledge, and access.
- Science should be rooted in local realities, and local languages, too.
Our goal isn’t just to analyze data. It’s to use data to support health, drive agricultural innovation, and empower researchers across Africa. We believe in a future where African institutions use their
own data not just to publish papers but to drive change, save lives, and shape policy: That’s where our Theory of Change begins. We want data to heal, and healing to be driven by data. That’s the essence of BioTiba.
A Name for the Mission
We could have picked a technical name. Something cold and abstract.
But instead, we chose something that speaks to who we are:
🌍 African-founded.
🧪 Science-driven.
💡 Mission-focused.
🤝 Rooted in people, culture, and purpose.
BioTiba carries that forward in every project, every collaboration, and every piece of work we do.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
Whether you’re a researcher, student, institution, or biotech lab, we’re building this future with you.
